Music
Our music program integrates music literacy and performance.

During the first 3 years the students develop the skills for reading and performing myriad styles of music using percussion instruments, voice and body.  Beginning in the third grade, Carlton’s kids develop their ensemble skills in Carlton’s Chorus, which performs throughout the school year.

Salem’s City wide instrumental program begins in the third grade with all children learning to play the recorder.  In the fourth grade, those who are interested choose a band or string instrument and are given small group and full ensemble lessons.

The instrumental program is enhanced at Carlton through the Hardscrabble grant, which has purchased keyboards that connect to the school’s computers, allowing for composition skills to be developed alongside basic piano technique.

The general music program is also supported by Salem State Colleges Music Department, which loans Carlton many of their Orff instruments when they not being used at the college.

We have an after school music club, open to 2nd-5th graders.  During this time our students explore their own forms of musical expression.

There is much research supporting the value of music education. For more information you can go to http://www.menc.org/resources/view/why-music-education-2007.
